Meeting the Perfect Woman Online

Yes I Do Love You by firoze shakir photographerno1

Let's look at the facts! Foreign Brides love knowledgeable men and it's perfectly typical in these areas for a young lady as young as 18 to wed a gentleman well into his s. Additionally, while your exes may have nagged forever that you don't create enough funds to support their credit card higher rolllin life-style, to woman from Vietnam you're fantastically well-off. Not only that, have you laid your eyes on Asian Brides?

I recently had the ultimate pleasure of chatting with Angela Mackintosh, Founder and CEO of the ezine Wow-womenonwriting. Angela has devoted endless hours - not to mention her blood, sweat and tears - constructing one of the most phenomenal resources for writers, especially women writers. And as you will find out, the pulsing vein that gives life to WOW extends right from Angela's heart.

Q: Let's start with how you got into writing.

In some ways I feel as though I've always been a writer. When I was in the first grade my teacher would give us a topic to write about and I'd turn it into a thirty-page novel-which wasn't hard to do considering the sheets of enormous recycled paper and those huge lines! I still have those books today, decorated in tempera paints and construction paper, with stories about haunted houses, sharks, and unflattering caricatures of my teachers. They loved that part!

Q: In your bio you mentioned that losing your mother at the tender age of twelve prompted you to start journaling. Do you draw from that experience for strength in your writing?

I'm glad you asked, because that's what I was going to say next. When my mother committed suicide, a friend gave me a journal to write in as a substitute shrink. This was in the early eighties and my father didn't subscribe to the whole 'get help' thing, so the journal was really all I had. When I filled one, I went onto the next, and now I have a stack of journals filled with somewhat depressing rants, but also very funny moments-my first real boyfriend, going through puberty, and experimenting with various illegal substances-it reads like a Judy Blume novel.

And to this day, at my ripe age, it still does affect my writing, specifically, my fiction writing. I get into the zone where I can feel the character's pain or conflict and let it flow out subconsciously. I'm sure most writers do this whether they realize it or not. We all draw from our life experiences in one way or another...maybe that's why my fiction writing tends to be full of dark satire and plot twists. Quite the opposite of my nonfiction writing or WOW!'s articles!

Q: Tell us about WOW! Where did the idea come from?

The idea for WOW! started as something completely different. At the time I was working on my novel in progress, and wanted to find a way to supplement my income through writing. I had a successful graphic arts business making six-figures, but I found myself jumping back and forth between right and left-brain too much. It took me three hours to switch from my writer's brain to my artist's brain, so I figured if I could start a business related to writing, then I could keep from getting dizzy!

I came up with the idea that I wanted to write an e-book on finding your writer's voice. Don't laugh, but the book was tentatively titled, "Unlock the Power of Your Creativity: 101 Keys for Liberating Your Writer's Voice." Doesn't that have huge mega-sale-buy-me-now written all over it? So I contacted Beryl Bray who I'd met in a writer's meeting, and asked her to help me write it. I had a whole 40 page outline written covering various topics of voice. I took what I'd learned and applied a new spin on the subject, came up with unique exercises, and even a marketing plan. I was all set! One problem though... I decided that it was too cheesy to do. Plus, who was I? Why would anyone want to listen to me?

Needless to say, that idea quickly fell by the wayside, and it was back to the drawing board. Then a spark hit me, why not create something that utilized what I knew how to do best and add writing on top of it? My specialty was in creating art and campaigns for print magazines, so if I combined art with writing, basically making a website look like a print magazine, perhaps I could learn something along the way. By then I'd forgotten the whole reason of starting a new business was to get away from doing art and making my brain hurt!

At first it was simply going to be a writing website, but then I began thinking about it, and read some articles on marketing toward women. Beryl thought this was a bad idea at first, because we'd be missing half the audience. Then I heard something that Cynthia Kadohata said at a luncheon where she spoke. She said, "The more specific, the more universal." To me this meant a lot of things, especially geared toward my writing, but it also pertained to the website I wanted to create. And it was a relief! Why not create whatever we want and if people don't like it, so what? We had nothing to lose.

So I bought the domain name, set out creating the template in Adobe Illustrator, came up with the features and columns, and WOW! was born.

Q: What features are offered on the WOW! Women On Writing website?

WOW! is a free online magazine that helps writers through the process from aspiring to published. The women we interview and the freelancers we contract are experts in the publishing industry: authors, editors, literary agents, trade writers (copywriting, legal writing, business writing etc.) and publishers.

We sponsor a quarterly flash fiction contest, and this quarter the Globe Pequot Press' skirt! books is sponsoring an essay contest. http://wow-womenonwriting.com/contest.php

WOW! also provides several free newsletters, the Think Green! Job Board, and an active blog, The Muffin. We are also getting ready to launch the WOW! Classroom in January 2008, which will cover all sorts of topics from romance writing to getting published in magazines. Some award-winning authors are on board as instructors, and we're very excited!

Q: Can writers contribute to the WOW! website and what do you look for in contributed material?

Most definitely. We depend on freelancers to provide us with engaging material. All of our columns have a different mission. The Inspiration column, for example, is a vehicle to highlight a woman who's done something amazing in her life, or is battling a particular problem. The How 2 column is geared toward giving writers the answers they're seeking, whether it's book marketing, working a conference, or crafting your novel. Our 20 Questions column focuses on straight take-away material, while our newest column, Freelancer's Corner was built as a support for women who want to freelance. We added that column because we were receiving so many queries and didn't have the placement for them, so it's our gift to women writers to talk about whatever they want to, and get paid. Our pay rates are $50 - $150 per article. Although we are one of the highest paying eZines for writers, we still plan to raise these rates in the coming year.

Readers/writers who sign up for our newsletter get first access on submissions we're looking for, but you can also find them on our July Issue's Editor's Desk: http://www.wow-womenonwriting.com/11-editorsdesk.html

Q: What I like about the website is how it has a universal "feel". Wherever a person is in the writing arena - writers, editors, or publishers - one can come to the site and learn something. Was that the primary goal?

Thank you. But we didn't really think about it too much I guess. The thing we were most concerned about is the feeling of community, warmth, and encouragement. A little eye-candy doesn't hurt either!

Seriously, Lissa Warren, a publicist from Da Capo Press, said the same thing. She said, "Wow indeed. Women on Writing is an excellent source of information for writers-aspiring as well as established. And unlike so many sites these days, it has a personality."

I think there's a universal feel because we're all women. And even if it's a heavy-content article about how to set up your own publishing company or build your own writer's website, it's still all women sharing their knowledge, which makes it feel a lot more friendly.

Q: What article, interview or project have you done (for the site) that really stands out in your mind as a phenomenal experience?

For me, meeting my mentor, Amy Tan was a huge honor. Sitting with her in her hotel room chatting about everything for hours was the best! That article is very personal to me, and I let down my guard when writing it. I had to... to really express how I felt.

Chatting with Tiffani Amber-Thiessen was a blast, and her agent, Jennifer DeChiara is the sweetest person I've ever met! Oh, and the interview I just did with Kris Carr, of Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips, will knock your socks off. She's amazing!

We've been very lucky to receive some of the rarest interviews from women professionals. I've learned so much from each woman that it's hard to pick out one experience. In this month's Anniversary issue I share some funny anecdotes from the past year, if I may point your readers to our September's Editor's Desk.

Q: What do you want your readers, your fans and the visitors of your site to know about you and what you're doing?

Ladies, get ready for a fantastic new year of a bigger and better WOW! Women On Writing! She's getting a makeover very soon, launching a whole new WOW! Classroom, and will be diving into other media. (Shhh... it's a secret...)

As our family of staff members and contributing freelancers continue to grow, we're always thinking of new ways to help women writers fulfill their publishing dreams. Next on the list: world domination for women writers! (LOL)

Angela, thank you so much for taking the time to answer our burning questions. We look forward to seeing what secrets you have in store for us in the coming months. We'll be sure to check back with you to see how high in the Stratosphere you've taken WOW. And a heart-filled "Happy Anniversary" to WOW as they've reached their One Year Anniversary in publication!

::APPLAUSE!!::

WOW is the perfect example of what a magazine needs to do to stay alive in the cut-throat competition of the publishing world. Congratulations WOW team and awesome job, Angela. It's an honor to work with/for you. ;o)

In countries similar to this beauty is extremely important, so they really do keep good care of themselves. And also, ladies libbers in these areas are thought to be lesbians and social outcasts! So think about striking the Asian land chatrooms and starting up some internet friendly relationships. You got to do it in the center of the night, because it's night time there when it's day in your city.

Also, not all Asian country chat room prospects are the same. For instance it is restricted in Vietnam to own a personal computer. This means that when you're chatting with a Vietnamese young female she is sitting in a college or a high school on the computer! These young females just adore to meet westward males and also have a lot of inquiries about the nation that you are now living in.

Be cautious not to visit too fast though, since they're just so damn social thatit is simple to do. An excellent thought is to acquire yourself a few different chat names, so that you can have online friendships with more then one of them at a time without it getting too crowded.
